Easter in Alcochete isn't just another date on the calendar - it's the time of year when the town is filled with colour, devotion and tradition. Between the sounds of the pipers, the shared laughter and the faith that crosses generations, we experience the Círio dos Marítimos de Alcochete, one of the oldest festivities rooted in the identity of this riverside town.

A Promise That Endures Through Time
The story goes that the Círio came about centuries ago in fulfilment of a promise to Our Lady of Atalaia, the protector of seafarers. Since then, year after year, the tradition has remained alive, passed down from parents to children, from grandparents to grandchildren, in a mixture of faith, celebration and community spirit.

It all starts on Hallelujah Saturday, with the arrival of the ‘Chininá’ - the gaiteiro and percussionist who travel the streets of Alcochete announcing the festival. Passers-by immediately feel the vibrant energy of tradition taking over the town.

The unique Women on Horseback Parade
On Easter Sunday, one of the most anticipated moments takes place: the parade of single and married women, mounted on donkeys and facing the river. At the head of the procession is the festival-goer's son, accompanied by the judge and judge of the festival. This image, full of symbolism, is one of the living postcards of Easter in Alcochete and a source of pride for the community.

Pilgrimage, Faith and Auctions
On Monday morning, the inhabitants of Alcochete set off for Atalaia, some on foot, others by car, carrying the flags they bought the previous year. Mass and the blessing of the flags take place in the Church of Atalaia, followed by an emotional procession. But the festivities don't end there! Later in the afternoon, the auction of the flags and fogaças takes place - a lively moment that helps to ensure that the Círio is held year after year.
